May 15, 2014 (newstodate): While Nordic unions backed by colleagues in North America are not exactly supportive of plans by Norwegian to spread its wings on new intercontinental routes, the low-cost carrier keeps developing its visions.
According to media reports, Norwegian will build further on its first long-haul plans in the USA and Asia to add also flights to yet-unpublished destinations in South America with its growing fleet of Boeing 787 and Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
The new base in Barcelona, opened in March 2014, will provide a launch ramp for new routes to South American destinations that are today served only by few international carrier at high rates due to limited competition.
In this effort, Norwegian would enjoy the benefits from registering its long-haul airline in Ireland that has favorable air services agreement with most of the world, including countries in South America.
Also in the searchlight are routes from Barcelona to destinations in Africa, another continent with limited competition on international air fares, media sources say.
In the fleet of Norwegian are now seven Boeing 787 aircraft, increasing to 17 by 2018.
