May 26, 2014 (newstodate): Norway's Lakselv Banak Airport, near the Polar circle, is fully capable of handling the planned freighter traffic by the new venture under formation, Viking International Airlines.
-We have been handling large freighters before, like the AN-124, so we see no problems in welcoming the new carrier to our airport by September 2014 that has been aired as the possible launch date of the new service to the USA and Asia, says Steinn Solheim, Lakselv Banak Airport manager.
-Most of the pertinent airport infrastructure is in place, and while some additional equipment may be needed this will not constitute any problem or challenge for us. On the handling side, Widere is the airport's only handling provider and they may also not find specific problems with coping with Boeing 747 freighter operations.
-We have seen several earlier plans and attempts to set up services similar to Viking International Airlines. Unfortunately, they all stumbled mainly due to the lack of import volumes sufficient to ensure a balanced operation and sound economy. This will be a challenge also for this new venture but I am convinced they have taken this into considerations as well, says Mr Solheim.
