May 12, 2014 (newstodate): In its latest financial report covering this year's first quarter, Finnair stated that "cargo traffic continued to suffer from market overcapacity, but there were early signs of a recovery in demand".
This was further demonstrated by its latest statistics, April 2014, that showed that a total of 6,752 tonnes was carried in belly holds on the crucial Asian routes, an increase by only 1.2 percent, y-o-y, and in the first four months of this year, the Asian volumes were down by 1.3 percent, to 24,907 tonnes.
Finnair Cargo is anyhow to boost its freighter services from this summer on routes between Europe and Asian destinations Hong Kong and Hanoi.
Finnair Cargo is to activate a second MD-11F freighter from the pool of four ex-Finnair converted MD-11F aircraft operated by Nordic Global Airlines.
Finnair Cargo has also added an en-route technical stop at Novosibirsk on the eastward flight, and plans are to include a stop on the westbound return flight from May 2014 as well.
-We could fly non-stop, but re-fueling at Novosibirsk allows us to operate the flight with a full payload in both directions, Juha Jarvinen, Finnair Cargo Mng Dir, told newstodate earlier this year.
