May 09, 2014 (newstodate): The Asian traffic is crucial to Finnair Cargo, but the market is still growing at a slow pace as seen in the latest statistics on April 2014.
A total of 6,752 tonnes was carried in belly holds on the Asian routes, an increase by only 1.2 percent, y-o-y.
And for the first four months of this year, the Asian volumes were down by 1.3 percent, to 24,907 tonnes.
In addition to cargo on Finnair's passenger flights, Finnair Cargo also operates MD-11F freighter flights between Brussels, Helsinki, Hong Kong and Hanoi adding to the Asian volumes.
In April 2014, cargo on freighter flights thus generated 2,943 tonnes of cargo, up 2.8 percent, y-o-y, and 12,283 tonnes in January-April 2014, an increase by 44.7 percent.
Cargo on the North Atlantic flights increased by 22.5 percent in April 2014, to 679 tonnes, and by 9.9 percent, Jan-Apr, to 2,714 tonnes.
The European cargo also increased in April by 9.5 percent, y-o-y, to 2,129 tones, and by 0.8 percent, Jan-Apr, to 7,292 tonnes.
Overall, cargo on Finnair's passenger flights was up four percent in April to 9,713 tonnes, while still down 0.1 percent in Jan-Apr, to 35,531 tonnes.
Together, Finnair Cargo's volumes on passenger and freighter flights totaled 12,669 tonnes in April, up 3.8 percent, y-o-y, and rising 8.2 percent during Jan-Apr, to 47,888 tonnes.
