May 26, 2014 (newstodate): Hopes in Northern Iceland for start of new international scheduled services may be a bit premature.
On May 22, 2014, newstodate reported plans aired by the Greenlandic carrier Greenland Express under formation, to launch also flights between Akureiry and European destinations, primarily Copenhagen starting soon.
-We expect to see Greenland Express opening flights to connect Akureyri with Copenhagen and Aalborg in Denmark starting from June 11, 2014, with two weekly rotations on the route, Sigurdur Peter Hjaltason, Nordlandair Quality Manager and personally a key driver in efforts to boost flight connections to Akureyri Airport, told newstodate.
This may be overly optimistic, though.
-The plans are on the drawing board, but no eventual decision has been made, says Gert Brask, Greenland Express.
-We have been contacted by a group behind the plans of Akureyri and have responded to their approach. But it is really up to Denim Air, not Greenland Express, to handle this issue and the start of services between Greenland and Denmark via Keflavik at Iceland remains our key challenge and top priority, says Mr Brask.
In the meantime, Greenland Express has also postponed its planned start of operations from June 2, 2014, claiming slow handling by the Dutch CAA of the last remaining issues as the cause behind the sustained delay.
