Apr 23, 2014 (newstodate): Two of three major cargo airports in Sweden, managed by Swedavia, are seeing positive trends in 2014 after a bleak year in 2013.
In Q1, Stockholm Arlanda Airport thus saw cargo volumes up by 9.8 percent, y-o-y, to 33,711 tonnes.
In 2013, the airport managed only one percent growth in volumes, y-o-y, to a total of 129,653 tonnes.
Second-largest in cargo volumes, Gothenburg Landvetter Airport however continued its downward slide in volumes in Q1, 2014, dropping 8.5 percent to 17,256 tonnes after decreasing also in 2013 by 8.7 percent to 76,014 tonnes.
By contract, Malmo Sturup Airport saw cargo growth returning in Q1, 2014, growing volumes by 3.3 percent, y-o-y, to 5,567 tonnes after declining 10 percent in 2013 to 22,217 tonnes.
Together, the three airports thus saw an increase in volumes by 2.9 percent, y-o-y, after decreasing by 3.6 percent in 2013.
-The growth in volumes at Stockholm Arlanda Airport is not least due to the increase in frequencies by Emirates as well as cargo carried by Norwegian, but volumes are also increasing in the express carrier segment, says Ylva Arvidsson, Swedavia Director Cargo.
-Malmo Sturup Airport is benefiting from the start of services by Atran's weekly Boeing 737-400F freighter flight from January 9, 2014, to Moscow, now further strengthened by AirBridgeCargo's new weekly Boeing 747-8F service starting from April.
-Finally, the decline at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport is a result from Emirates SkyCargo's decision to reduce their freighter operations at the airport from three to two weekly rotations, says Ms Arvidsson.
