Apr 28, 2014 (newstodate): The number of airlines in Russia is steadily declining, reflecting the sustained process of consolidation in the industry.
In 2000 there were 296 AOC-holding carriers in Russia, and this had declined to 235 in 2002 already.
The number fell further to 199 in 2004, and to 159 in 2010.
Since 2010 the number of Russian carriers has again declined by 41 carriers as many have lost the AOC after investigations revealing financial instability, quality issues or insufficient number of aircraft to maintain the AOC.
By the start of Q2, 2014, the are now a total of 121 Russian carriers including 23 with both international and domestic flights, 30 airlines engaged in regional and inter-regional flights, 14 with domestic flights, and eight carriers in the all-cargo business.
