Mar 21, 2014 (newstodate): One of Russia's many problems in developing its civil aviation remains the sustained dominance of the three airports around the capital plus St Petersburg.
In 2013, the four top airports together accounted for a total of 95,220,000 passengers - or no less than 75 percent of all passengers through Russia's Top-20 airports.
The result is that most of the air travel in the country will require transfer through these four airports, entailing overly prolonged total travel times and inefficient air transport options.
And the four airports just continue to grow.
In 2013, #1 Moscow Domodedovo Airport thus increased in pax volumes by 9.2 percent, y-o-y, to 30,760,000 passengers, followed by Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport, up 11.7 percent to 29,256,000 passengers, St Petersburg Pulkovo Airport was up 15.2 percent to 12,854,366 passengers, and finally Moscow Vnukovo Airport increased by 15.2 percent to 11,175,100 passengers.
Next, there is a steep drop down in volumes from the #5 position with Yekaterinburg Koltsovo Airport up 13.5 percent to "only" 4,293,002 passengers.
