Mar 28, 2014 (newstodate): The Norwegian region north of the polar circle needs a new airport to replace the existing, inadequately equipped airport.
Already in 2010, a regional airport development council filed an application for a concession to build a new airport, but it was shelved pending the completion of a comprehensive analysis of the country's future airport infrastructure that was finalized by late 2013 in the form a National Transport Plan 2014-23.
Avinor, that is already operating the existing Mo i Rana Airport, has now been entrusted with the task to manage the detailed planning of a new airport that will be equipped with a runway capable of operating also jet aircraft flights.
The existing facility has a 871 m, runway only capable of operations by small turboprop aircraft.
