Mar 27, 2014 (newstodate): Currently serving general and corporate aviation only, Latvia's Jurmala Airport had ambitions to become the country's second international airport from 2013 already - but the process is still stalled.
-The environmental impact assessment process which was applied to airport expansion is being performed now. Regrettably, we are still unable to predict when it could be finished, says Viktorija alajeva, Tukums Airport Commercial director.
-The process is taking much more time then we could expect in the beginning. I cannot provide any precise information about the airport's commercial opening date, but we plan that it could happen this year.
Originally a Soviet air force base, the privately-owned airport changed its name from Tukums Airport to Jurmala Airport in 2012 and has since embarked on a redevelopment program including construction of a new passenger terminal that will be commissioned within the coming few months.
Having passed flight inspections of its ILS system at the 2,500m runway, the airport is now in the certification process for instrumental flights and ATC service implementation works.
