Mar 20, 2014 (newstodate): The Lithuanian handling company at Vilnius Airport, BALT-Cargo was expecting sustained development in 2013 - but hopes did not fully materialize.
-We had a fair year in 2013, but as our cargo volumes are mainly transiting at the airport for onward road transportation to markets like Belorussia, Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan we are of course very sensitive to economic and political trepidations, says Olegas Kairys, BALT-Cargo managing director.
-If our neighbors do not thrive, neither do we. We did largely meet our goals in 2013, but as for 2014 I would not dare to make any predictions as of now. Suffice it to say that I am not overly optimistic..
-Looking at the developments in Lithuania itself, signs remain quite promising and we will certainly proceed with plans for renovating our existing premises, now over 20 years old, to meet new requirements for efficiency and provide us with the flexibility needed to adapt to changes in the business.
-Basically, our target for these projects is to enhance efficiency to be able to boost production without having to increase staff, says Mr Kairys.
The timing of the coming works on new facilities still hinges on the over-all planning made by Vilnius Airport and decisions on allocation of space and new land leases.
Among the positive news in 2013 was the company's contract with Turkish Airlines to provide cargo handling of the airline's flights from Vilnius to Istanbul starting from June 11, 2013, with three weekly rotations on the triangular route Istanbul-Tallinn-Vilnius-Istanbul, a traffic to be further increased in 2014.
