Mar 07, 2014 (newstodate): In 2013, Finland and Russia negotiated a new air services agreement, opening up for liberalization in the sphere of air transportation between the two countries.
Under the new agreement, Finnair Cargo can operate nine weekly freighter flights through Russia's airspace including the Siberian air lanes while actually utilizing only two of these to Hanoi and Hong Kong, respectively.
With these rights, Finnair Cargo can operate direct non-stop flights between Europe and Asia without obligations to perform en-route technical stops.
Anyhow, the carrier is actually including an en-route technical stop at Novosibirsk on the eastward flight and plans also to include a stop on the westbound return flight from May 2014.
-We could fly non-stop, but re-fueling at Novosibirsk allows us to operate the flight with a full payload in both directions, says Juha Jrvinen, Finnair Cargo Mng Dir.
-Adding to the operational benefits, fueling at Novosibirsk is also comparatively cheaper, further optimizing the cost-efficiency of the freighter flights. And Novosibirsk is indeed a modern and well-functioning airport, says Mr Jrvinen.
