Mar 25, 2014 (newstodate): Sweden is a key cargo market for nearby Finland's Helsinki-based carrier Finnair.
-With narrow-body capacity on flights between the two countries as well as very short trucking times via ferry connections, Sweden plays an important role for Finnair Cargo that is also one of the major players thanks to the range of Asian connections, says Martin Werge, Finnair Cargo Sales Director for Northern Europe comprising responsibility for sales in Denmark, Norway and Sweden as well as the Baltic countries, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovenia.
-Our main asset is the Asian traffic via Helsinki, carried by the passenger airline's Airbus A340/A330 fleet as well as two, soon three weekly rotations between Helsinki and Hanoi and Hong Kong.
-The main-deck capacity is indeed important and of course I would like to see more rotations and more freighter routes. But on the other hand, few carriers make money on the freighter operations that are more to be considered a strategic setup securing a firm basis in the market. We do see to it that our freighter operations are viable as we are rather strict with keeping rates on a level corresponding to the service quality, including the very short transfer times offered by Finnair Cargo.
-Most of the Swedish exporters are among our customers, some on flexible but long-term contracts, others on ad-hoc or short-term agreements. We are open to all players in the markets without favoring anyone above others. But we are keen to maintain a fair ration between rates and quality meaning that mere volumes to not reign supreme in our sales efforts, says Mr Werge.
Finnair Cargo is invariably among the Top-5 IATA carriers in Sweden's monthly CASS statistics, but expects to double its sales by 2020 as the Airbus A350 capacity is introduced.
