Mar 05, 2014 (newstodate): The introduction from 2015 of the Airbus A350 aircraft into the fleet of Finnair will represent a new platform for Finnair Cargo as well.
-As the A350 replaces the current Airbus A330 and A340 fleet on the long-haul routes to Asia and USA, the cargo capacity on each flight will increase from seven to 17-18 tonnes, and when all 11 A350 aircraft are phased in by 2020 our total cargo capacity will be 50 percent higher than today, says Juha Jrvinen, Finnair Cargo mng dir.
-For the Finnair Group, air cargo is not marginal business but one of three strategic core areas. Finnair Cargo actually contributes 17 percent of the airline's total revenues, thus playing a vital role in sustaining and developing the route network.
-To cope with the expansion driven by the introduction of the Airbus A350 fleet, one crucial element is cargo handling at our hub at Helsinki Vanta Airport. Only 20 percent of total cargo volume has its origin or destination in the Finnish market, with transit cargo comprising 80 percent of the traffic. Fast and efficient cargo handling at the airport is thus crucial to secure future growth and quality.
-The Finnair Group Board is therefore to decide on construction of an entirely new cargo handling terminal at the airport, designed by a German consulting company. A decision to launch the project including its financing is therefore expected already later this year, with construction works to start immediately thereafter.
-The new cargo terminal will cover 28,000 sq m, lifting the total annual handling capacity to 300,000 tonnes when completed by late 2016 or early 2017, doubling the current capacity in our existing terminal that will then be decommissioned.
-The new terminal is designed to the handling of specialized airfreight rather than merely bulks of general cargo reflecting the development in our product portfolio with an emphasis on handling of perishables, dangerous goods and not least pharma products, in addition to general cargo, says Mr Jrvinen.
