Feb 14, 2014 (newstodate): In 2013, Finland and Russia negotiated a new air services agreement, opening up for liberalization in the sphere of air transportation between the two countries.
As a result from the new agreement, Finnish carriers have been allowed to launch traffic to new destinations in Russia in addition to the two now served by Finnair, Moscow and St Petersburg.
New to come are flights by Finnish carriers to Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod and Samara, and the agreement also states that Finland may designate more than one carrier, currently Finnair, to serve the routes.
As one possibility, Finnair's JV with FlyBe, FlyBe Nordic may thus enter the Russian market with flights from Helsinki.
Also a result of the liberalization of air services between Finland and Russia, a second Russian carrier will enter the route between Moscow and Helsinki from 2014.
New on the route will be S7 Sibir starting from April 26, 2014, with daily rotations using Airbus A319 aircraft.
Today, Finnair and Aeroflot are code-sharing their flights on the route, while Finnair is actually a member of the oneworld airline alliance together with S7 Sibir.
