Feb 27, 2014 (newstodate): Kazakhstan is to see the formation of a new airline to provide fresh domestic air travel opportunities.
The country's president has met with hi-level representatives from Bombardier in a discussion over cooperation in setting up a new domestic carrier, to be named Air Kazakhstan.
The new project will draw on the experience from the establishing in 2001 of the country's leading international carrier Air Astana that was set up by the state in a similar JV with the British company BAE Systems.
In today's situation, Air Astana provides flight to only 12 out of 21 Kazakh domestic airports after it phased out its Fokker 50 aircraft as its fleet of jet aircraft cannot operate into many of the country's poorly-equipped domestic airports.
The new domestic carrier will have a fleet comprising up to 10 Bombardier Q400 aircraft, and operations are planned to launch in 2015.
With a fleet of 30 aircraft, Air Astana operates scheduled domestic and international services on 63 routes from its main hub, Almaty International Airport, and from its two secondary hubs, Astana International Airport and Atyrau Airport
