Feb 28, 2014 (newstodate): Norway's large export by air of salmon to the global marketplace is attractive business - but demanding..
-We are seeing sustained high loads of salmon and for us this export commodity is indeed attractive as a good base load, but rates have really hit the bottom. I cannot imagine that they could dip further, says Noud Duyzings, Director KLM/Air France/Martinair Cargo Nordic.
-Competition is fierce, there is a huge over-capacity in the market, and the predictability of bookings is rather difficult. Exporters and forwarders often make late bookings while shopping for low rates in the ad-hoc market, so customer loyalty does not count much.
-Yield-wise we are seeing a decline, also reflecting that while the bulk of the salmon exports still goes to Asian destinations, the growth is especially high in the North American-bound traffic where yields are naturally lower, reflecting the shorter flights. Actually, the growth in our salmon business towards North America is about 100 percent over the last year - and this does have an impact.
-Still Norway's salmon export is important to us, and we are increasing our share of this market significantly, says Mr Duyzings.
All salmon shipments carried by KLM and Air France Cargo are trucked into the hubs at Amsterdam and Paris, while only about five percent of the carriers' general cargo is flown out of the country.
