Feb 04, 2014 (newstodate): There may be an abundance of oil and gas in the Arctic region - but the exploration and test drilling is slow in coming.
As a consequence, Air Greenland has cancelled its order for delivery of two EC225 Super Puma Helicopters slated for delivery in 2014.
Air Greenland placed its order with Eurocopter in 2011, but has now settled the financial issues from the cancellation with the manufacturer.
Beside aiming at serving the expected oil and gas boom around Greenland, Air Greenland is also contracted by the state to provide SAR services, which is currently operated with the last two remaining and aging Sikorsky S-61 helicopters that have been dedicated solely to this mission.
Air Greenland phased out its S-61 helicopters from commercial service by December 31, 2012, keeping only the two aircraft for SAR mission at high maintenance and operational costs.
It remains unknown at this moment how the future for SAR missions by Air Greenland will look after the cancellation of the Super Puma order.
