Feb 07, 2014 (newstodate): Finnair came off to a rather nice start in 2014, with cargo volumes up by 11.4 percent, y-o-y.
A total of 11,273 tonnes of cargo was carried on the airline's passenger and freighter flights, but while the volumes on passenger flights dropped 4.8 percent, y-o-y, to 8,182 tonnes, this was more than offset by volumes carried on the freighter services that increased by 110,2 percent, y-o-y, to 3,065 tonnes in January 2014.
The performance by the freighter operations was even more significant as cargo volumes were actually down on all other traffic segments, including the crucial Asian traffic where volumes dipped 5.2 percent, y-o-y, to 5,677 tonnes.
Revenue tonne-kilometers were up by 10.2 percent while available tonne-kilometers increased "only" by 4.2 percent, causing the over-all cargo load factor to increase by 3.3 ppt to 61.1 percent.
During this winter's freighter schedule, Finnair is operating the new twice-weekly service between Hanoi and Helsinki as well as two weekly rotations between Helsinki and Hong Kong, one weekly rotations to New York, and two weekly rotations between Helsinki and the carrier's second European cargo hub, Brussels.
