Feb 17, 2014 (newstodate): Vagar Airport, on the Faroe Islands, ended 2013 with a moderate growth in cargo volumes.
The airport handled a total of 414 tonnes, which was an increase by 3.7 percent, y-o-y, while mail volumes were down by 4.2 percent, to 203 tonnes.
This year started out with a drop by 7.7 percent, y-o-y, in cargo, to 32.4 tonnes, while mail volumes were roughly unchanged at 18.2 tonnes, up 0.6 percent.
The Airport now offers four all-year routes to and from the Faroe Islands, the biggest of which is Copenhagen, followed by Billund, Bergen and Reykjavik, all measured in passenger figures.
A new passenger terminal will be commissioned in time for the coming summer traffic, but efforts to attract new airlines have so far produced no results.
The local airline, Atlantic Airways is now in the process of overhauling its strategy, to be finalized also before summer, and the state, now holding two-thirds of the stake in the airline, has decided to buy out the private shareholders, turning off aspirations for a future full privatization or cooperation with a strategic partner.
