Feb 07, 2014 (newstodate): Vagar Airport, on the Faroe Islands, came off to a weak start in cargo volumes in 2014.
Only 32 tonnes of cargo were handled at the airport, down 7.7 percent, y-o-y, in addition to 18.2 tonnes of mail that was almost unchanged against last year.
In 2013 the airport handled a total of 414 tonnes of cargo, up 3.7 percent, and 203 tonnes of mail, which was down 4-2 percent, y-o-y.
The only carrier providing year-round scheduled services at Vagar Airport is the Faroese carrier Atlantic Airways that is now to work out a new strategy expected to be presented by June 2014.
Atlantic Airways operates a fleet of three Airbus A319 aircraft, one Avro RJ100 and two Bell 412 helicopter for SAR operations.
Indications are that Atlantic Airways may consider changing the fleet to less larger aircraft in favor of adding smaller aircraft that might open up new business in the regional air traffic, sources say.
Vagar Airport is keen to attract new airline operators, but so far without results due to the limited passenger volumes in the small market.
