Feb 21, 2014 (newstodate): The EU Commission has ruled on the issue of state aid to airports, setting new standards.
A total of 28 cases involving state aid to airports in Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Sweden, Romania and Spain is currently under investigation, while four cases have now been settled.
In most cases, these issues concern airport dealings with Ryanair.
The four cases now concluded concern financial incentives granted to Berlin Schoenefeld Airport, a marketing deal between Denmark's Aarhus Airport and Ryanair, and investment aid for Marseille Provence Airport and Czech Ostrava airport, and in these cases no state aid has been involved, the Commission says.
The new rules sets annual passenger volumes at five mio as the dividing line.
Thus, airports with more than five mio passengers will in the future be barred from receiving state aid unless special conditions apply, such as a clear market failure.
Airports with less than five mio passengers will need to phase out state aid over a 10-year period, and they must present a business plan to qualify for state aid.
