Feb 12, 2014 (newstodate): If dreams by two leading Scandinavian airports come true, Scandinavians will have to increase their intercontinental flights considerably.
First, Denmark's Copenhagen Airport has vented its strategy for the addition of at least 15 new long-haul destinations, and now Norway's Avinor has presented their visions for attracting a further 20 new long-haul routes from Norway including destinations like Toronto, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, Houston, Miami, Sao Paulo, Johannesburg, Delhi, Beijing, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
In the case of Copenhagen Airport, plans are on the table for a major development of the airport's infrastructure over the coming years to accommodate the expected new traffic including the ability handling of aircraft up to the size of Airbus A380.
Oslo Gardermoen Airport will also need expansion to cope with a growth in routes to provide more direct long-haul flights, allowing passengers to by-pass the competing hubs such as Copenhagen Airport.
In 2013, Copenhagen Airport generated a total of 24.1 mio passengers, while another 22.9 mio passengers passed through Oslo Gardermoen Airport, and Sweden's Stockholm Arlanda Airport saw 20.7 mio passengers.
The growth in Copenhagen was 3.1 percent, y-o-y, in Oslo four percent, and in Stockholm 5.3 percent.
