Feb 04, 2014 (newstodate): Armenia is to upgrade the Stepanavan Airport, in the country's Lori province.
The state-owned airport operated by Armenia International Airports that is also behind Yerevan Airport was constructed in 1982, but has seen little traffic since 2013.
In 2013, the government transferred the airport to the Ministry of Emergency Situations aiming at making it a hub for humanitarian and relief flights by CSTO, the Collective Security Treaty Organization comprising Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, as well as attracting commercial air services as well.
The redevelopment will start this year and will comprise an upgrading of the airport's 1,998m runway as well as other pertinent infrastructure.
