Dec 08, 2014 (newstodate): From rumor to a confirmed fact: The Scandinavian carrier SAS is to acquire all shares in Cimber A/S, pending government approvals.
In September 2014, Cimber announced that all activities would cease as of April 1, 2015 - unless new opportunities appeared.
For 10 years, Cimber has been provider to SAS, currently operating four CRJ200 aircraft on regional routes on behalf of its client.
SAS has, however, decided not to extend the contract expiring by the end of March 2015, leaving Cimber with a blank order book after this date.
Now SAS has bought Cimber's sole asset, its AOC, and intends to place its fleet of 12 CRJ900 aircraft with Cimber for operating SAS' regional network.
-The acquisition of Cimber will give SAS access to a specialist within regional flights with a very competitive production platform that complements SAS' production of larger Airbus and Boeing aircraft. Due to expected synergies, the acquisition of Cimber can also provide opportunities for SAS to maintain and develop regional routes within the network for the benefit of SAS customers, says Rickard Gustafson, SAS President & CEO.
Cimber will now dispose of its fleet of CRJ200 and ATR75 aircraft, while cockpit and cabin crews to operate under the new ownership by SAS will be employed on fresh, non-SAS conditions.
Cimber was established 15 May 2012 after the bankruptcy of Cimber Sterling earlier same month.
Cimber Sterling was set up on August 1, 1950, but met its destiny after the Ukrainian oligarch Igor Kolomoyski acquired a majority stake in 2011.
