Dec 16, 2014 (newstodate): As in previous years, effective marketing of Finland's Lapland region as the home turf of Santa Claus is generating a huge load of air travel from especially the UK but also other countries including the Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain, Romania, and France.
Only last weekend saw 80 aircraft carrying some 15,000 passengers into the airports of Rovaniemi, Ivalo and Kittila above the Arctic circle.
In total more than 400 flights will call at the three airports, with Kittala this year taking over the #1 position from Rovaniemi that has so far been named Santa Claus Airport.
Kittila will thus receive 150 flights, Rovaniemi 120 and another 60 flights destined for Enontekio and Ivalo, while 10 charter flights will be heading for Kuusamo.
