Dec 10, 2014 (newstodate): Starting from February 13, 2015, Riga Airport will see Turkmenistan Airlines as a new operator.
The carrier will add Riga as a new destination from Ashgabat, and next step from Summer 2015 will be extending the flight to Toronto, in Canada, with Riga as an intermediate stop.
Uzbekistan Airways is already using Riga Airport as a transit hub on its flights between Tashkent and New York launched on October 31, 2004, operating Boeing 767-300ER aircraft on two weekly rotations on the route.
Still to be confirmed are also plans by Azerbaijan's cargo carrier Silkway Airlines to set up a new cargo complex at Riga Airport to serve the European market.
Details and, indeed, confirmation of these plans are expected by end of January 2015 when it will also become know which routes will be set up at Riga by the Azer carrier.
All these operators are adding to the image of Riga Airport as an efficient transit hub between Europe, Central Asia and the Americas for both passenger and cargo transportation.
Riga Airport was first efficiently highlighted in the cargo business as it emerged as the prime transfer hub for ISAF operations to support the Afghan mission with large volumes of flights by the US carriers National Air Cargo and Kalitta Air with up to three daily rotations during the peak.
