Dec 03, 2014 (newstodate): Finnair has decided to cease all freighter operations by the end of December 2015.
-Finnair Cargo does not see long-haul freighter operations with an MD-11 as a sustainable solution in todays market situation laden with elements such as overcapacity, deteriorating yields and fluctuating currencies, says Mikko Turtiainen, Finnair Vice President Global Sales in a company newsletter.
Finnair Cargo has been on/off in the freighter market, last launching the current freighter business in May 12, 2010, with two weekly rotations between Helsinki and Hong Kong, as well as two weekly flights between Helsinki and Seoul with MD-11F aircraft.
From August 4, 2011, Finnair Cargo's freighter traffic was transferred to the JV carrier Nordic Global Airlines Ltd operating Finnair Cargo's network of freighter destinations.
In June 2011, Finnair Cargo also entered into a partnership agreement with World Airways for operating two weekly rotations for Finnair Cargo with MD-11F aircraft between Helsinki, New York and Shanghai.
Starting from May 2014, Finnair Cargo replaced the MD-11F between its two European cargo hubs, Helsinki and Brussels, with Airbus A300-600F from European Air Transport, leaving the MD-11F to serve only on the freighter route between Helsinki and Hong Kong.
