Dec 10, 2014 (newstodate): At long last, the project for converting Airbus A330 aircraft into freighters is on firm grounds.
The Airbus subsidiary EFW today confirms that launch customer for the program will be Egyptair.
-Egyptair has signed a contract with EFW for conversion of two of its Airbus A330-200 passenger aircraft into cargo versions, with options for a further two conversions, says Wolfgang Schmid, EFW A330 P2F program manager.
-The first of the two aircraft conversions on firm order now will be delivered by medio 2018, with the second to follow by the end of the year, says Mr Schmid.
When the A330 P2f Program was announced in February 2012, entry into service of the first A330 aircraft to be converted was slated for 2016. This was later changed to 2017 - and now to 2018.
The A330 P2F program includes two versions the A330-200P2F and the larger A330-300P2F.
Coming first will be the larger A330-300P2F that will be particularly suitable for integrators and express carriers thanks to its high volumetric payload capability with lower-density cargo.
Complementing this will be the A330-200P2F which will be optimized for higher-density freight and longer range performance.
The production capacity is planned for up to 20 conversions per year.
The MoU for A330 P2F Airbus was signed by Airbus, ST Aerospace and EADS EFW, with ST Aerospace to lead the A330 P2F engineering development, working with Airbus and EADS EFW that will subsequently be responsible as program lead during the industrial phase, with most of the conversions to be performed at the facilities in Dresden, Germany.
