Dec 01, 2014 (newstodate): The upheavals in Europe's political situation has caused Latvia's airBaltic to step back from its strong focus on transfer flights via the hub at Riga Airport.
-The split between transfer traffic and point-to-point traffic is now around 45/55, mainly due to the effects from the deepening crisis over Ukraine, says Martin Gauss, airBaltic President and CEO.
-To be quite honest, we never foresaw from the beginning of the year that this crisis would continue to deepen and grow to today's proportions. We did, however, respond early to the changes brought about as transfer traffic dried up, allocating capacity instead to opening up more point-to-point routes, wet-lease and charter operations as well as expanding our offering of seasonal flights.
-Through these measures off-setting the negative consequences from the shortfall of transfer traffic, we have been able to sustain a satisfactory performance and present rather good results.
-There are, however, always potentials for meaningful transfer traffic, and whenever opportunities arise we will be determined to exploit them. But there is really more money in point-to-point traffic so we are not in any way threatened by the current turbulence in the market, says Mr Gauss.
