Dec 17, 2014 (newstodate): Over time, several attempts have been made to set up an all-cargo service on the Faeroe Islands - but so far unsuccessfully.
-We do send shipments by air with Atlantic Airways, but sea cargo offerings are both plentiful and selling at much lower rates so I do not see any immediate prospects for an air cargo operator here, says a freight forwarder at EUR Express on the Faroe Islands.
-Also imports are by far dominating, which would make a balanced freighter operation unfeasible at least as far ahead as I can see. We do export significant volumes of seafood but even these are taken by ship to the UK or to Denmark for onward transportation.
-The belly cargo capacity on Atlantic Airways' daily flights are for now quite sufficient to cover market needs, he says.
Even so, cargo volumes at the Faeroe Islands' Vagar Airport have risen 10.1 percent, y-o-y, during January-November 2014 to a total of 421 tonnes and accelerating during the latter half of this year.
