Nov 05, 2014 (newstodate): Plans for start of new international air services by Viking International Airlines may still be moving forward - but if so: very slowly....
As one physical evidence of a start of services, the company's prime mover John Kunkle visited Lakselv Banak Airport to discuss issues of handling and infrastructure with Avinor that later, upon request, allocated land for construction of a new cargo terminal to handle Viking's traffic with Boeing 747 freighters to fly to destination in the USA and Asia.
Since then nothing has happened, and Avinor now expects that no further move on the issue will be made until at least after the turn of the year.
The project group initially signaled the first flight with freighter aircraft to take place already by September 2014.
A Viking International Airlines company has been registered in Helsinki, Finland, headed by Mika Helenius, formerly Air Finland CEO until June 2012.
Already this summer, Norwegian media reported that the group behind Viking International Airlines, US-based Global First Response Inc had acquired a majority stake in a new company, Northcape Turnaroundport AS set up to provide handling of cruise ships in the country's northernmost region.
The plan was to offer facilities for turning around passengers and crews on cruise ships calling in the region, including flight connections by Viking International Airlines between Norway and the USA.
It is, however, also not known if the deal actually materialized.
