Nov 27, 2014 (newstodate): The Swedish carrier Amapola Flyg is preparing for adding two more Fokker 50 aircraft to its fleet currently comprising 10 Fokker 50 aircraft.
-The first Fokker 50 freighter with large cargo door will arrive shortly before Christmas, with the second to follow by April 2015, says Frank Christensen, Amapola CEO since November 1, 2014.
-This signals our intention to expand in the cargo business, and with the new large door-freighters new market opportunities will open up for us, adding to our existing capacity to serve the market.
-After these deliveries there are no further immediate plans for adding more aircraft to Amapola. We would rather like to see the effect from the new capability. But we are of course going for longer-term assignments rather than ad-hoc contracts that will remain marginal business with Amapola.
-Despite its age, the Fokker 50 remains a versatile and reliable aircraft, and it will still be with us for the next 10 years or more. The expected life cycle of a Fokker 50 is set at 90,000 flights, and our aircraft are still not above 30,000 flights, leaving much potential to be reaped.
-While this is not currently on the agenda, we will of course be looking into available options for replacing the Fokker 50 fleet in the future - but as said, this is not a major topic today, says Mr Christensen.
Amapola is today provide postal flights in the country, and one of the imminent tasks facing Mr Christensen in his new position will be the carrier's participation in PostNord's coming tender to be announced shortly, with the contract with the successful winner to take effect from January 1, 2016.
