Nov 11, 2014 (newstodate): The Latvian charter and ACMI company SmartLynx Airlines is now preparing for a rather calm winter season with a fleet of 10 Airbus A320 aircraft.
-There is really little business in the European markets during the winter season and we do not see this coming winter anything different from the previous years, says Aigars Jakovels, SmartLynx CFO.
-Everybody claim that the Asian market are still ripe with opportunities but we prefer not to be overly opportunistic and rather to play it safe. It is always a balance between risk and potential gains - and we opt out from risky business.
-Instead, we traditionally plan our winter seasons to be dedicated to staff training and aircraft maintenance to be ready and in good shape for the next summer season, and winter 2014/15 will be no exception.
-We will thus have our fleet of Airbus 320-200 aircraft undergo heavy maintenance at Magnetic MRO's hangars in Tallinn, Estonia, with the checks to be performed during layover from November 2014 to February 2015.
-We will, of course, still have aircraft in the air during the winter season, mostly on flights out of the Baltic region, and we are also negotiating some contract with European operators. But generally speaking we are lowering our profile these days in expectation of another booming season from summer 2015 with 11, probably 12 Airbus A320 aircraft in the air, says Mr Jacovels.
