Nov 19, 2014 (newstodate): Air corridors through Iranian airspace are becoming increasingly important for international carriers flying between Asia and Europe as well as the USA.
Since the shoot-down of the Malaysian passenger aircraft in Ukrainian airspace, international cargo and passenger carriers are seeking new safe corridors, with Iran emerging as an attractive alternative.
Today, US pax and cargo carriers perform 15 flights per day through Iranian airspace, but with 170 transit flights per day Gulf-based carriers are currently the dominating users of Iran's air services, and the country is now engaging in several projects to upgrade airport ATM services to boost the traffic further.
In July-August 2014, the transit traffic by foreign carriers increased by 68 percent to a total of over 20,000 flights.
