Nov 06, 2014 (newstodate): Fuel surcharges, levied by the airlines, have always raised suspicions in the freight forwarding market as veiled attempts to increase revenues - especially since last year when many airlines started basing fuel surcharges on chargeable weight, rather than gross weight.
-When world oil prices rise, airlines are always fast in responding by raising the fuel surcharges. Their response time is noticeably slower when it comes to times with falling oil prices, as in the current period, says Jorgen Ekwall, Greencarrier Airfreight Manager.
-Considering the differences between various airlines one may easily wonder if at least some of the actually use the fuel surcharges as an expedient way of adding revenues. But whenever you inquire into this issue you will invariably get a host of very different answers and explanations.
-I would refrain from concluding that airlines are dishonest, but I would venture to say that they are probably handling the issue "economically", says Mr Ekwall.
