Nov 26, 2014 (newstodate): On December 10, 2014, the EFTA court will announce a verdict on the strife between Isavia and WOW Air over slot times at Keflavik Airport - a decision sure to catch the attention of airlines and airport around the world.
The Icelandic Supreme Court has asked EFTA for an advisory opinion on how to interpret a Council Regulation regarding allocation of slots at Community airports.
At the core is a legal dispute over allocation this spring of slot times for WOW Air's intended Transatlantic flights.
The carrier's request coincided with Icelandair's slots, and WOW Air was therefore granted slot times one hour later than Icelandair by the slots coordinator serving Iceland, the Danish company Airport Coordination Denmark.
WOW Air has since battled against this decision claiming that it was in essence an effort to favor Icelandair over WOW Air, and thus running counter to competition rules.
The principal question is: can the decision by the slots coordinator be overwritten by a third party?
In practice the issue has now been left behind as WOW Air has been granted, and accepted, slot times for launch of Transatlantic flights from spring 2015 without collision with the departure times of Icelandair.
