Oct 30, 2014 (newstodate): The Russian bid for a commercial aircraft competing with the Airbus and Boeing alternative, the Sukhoi Superjet 100 has secured a significant break-through into the West European market.
First carrier to operate this aircraft will thus be the Belgian airline VLM Airlines that has signed a LoI with aircraft lessor Ilyushin Finance Co to take in two Superjet 100 regional aircraft in the long-range version under a 12-year operating lease, with options for two further aircraft.
The LoI also includes purchase rights for ten aircraft.
The Superjet aircraft will allow the carrier to launch scheduled services from 2015 on a network yet to be announced.
The operating range of the long-range variant joining the VLM Airlines fleet is 4,578km, while the operating range for the standard version aircraft is 3,048km.
VLM Airlines currently operates fleet of 12 Fokker 50 on ACMI and charter contracts.
