Oct 07, 2014 (newstodate): A worsening in relations between Lithuania and Russia during the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is making its impact on airfreight volumes at Lithuania's Vilnius Airport for September 2014.
As in the preceding month, air cargo volumes including mail were down in September at the airport, totaling 658 tonnes after dropping 23.52 percent, y-o-y.
The decline was most marked in the airfreight segment that was down 28 percent compared to last year.
Lithuanian hauliers are complaining of overly long customs and inspection procedures when crossing the border to Russia with cargo transferred through the harbors and airports of the country, destined for Russian consignees.
These volumes are therefore now seeking other points of entry for onward transportation into Russia.
This negative development has gained momentum through August and September, while air cargo volumes were increasing through the first seven months of this year.
By the end of September 2014 the airport had handled 5,588 tonnes of cargo, up 4.15 percent, y-o-y.
