Oct 17, 2014 (newstodate): While cargo volumes through Copenhagen Airport were down in Jan-May 2014, the integrator traffic took a different turn.
The shortfall of all-freighter operations at Copenhagen Airport caused total cargo volumes, excluding cargo carried by the integrators, to drop by 2.9 percent during the period, despite an increase by 11.3 percent in belly-load cargo.
But volumes transported by integrators FedEx and DHL saw a hefty increase by 153.8 percent, y-o-y, to 33,566 tonnes.
Of this total integrator volume, 20,147 tonnes was carried by freighters, an increase by 117.7 percent, y-o-y, while airfreight trucking generated another 13,419 tonnes of cargo, an increase by 238.5 percent, y-o-y.
Since 2013, Copenhagen Airport has seen a significant increase in the operations by DHL to relieve the stress at DHL Express' European hub at Leipzig Airport causing the company to re-route a number of flights through other airports serving as temporary sub-hubs, rather than operating them all through Leipzig.
And on October 1, 2014, FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. broke ground at the site of its new Nordic gateway facility at Copenhagen Airport to serve as a gateway for inbound and outbound shipments for Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden from the end of 2015.
