Oct 31, 2014 (newstodate): Armenia is finding its hard to recover its commercial aviation after the bankruptcy of its former national carrier, Armavia in 2013.
Hopes pinned on the development of another carrier Air Armenia are also fading as the airline has announced a two-month suspension of services.
Air Armenia has run into deep financial problems after generating a huge debts pile with Russia's Federal Air Navigation Service for air navigation services, and now AerCap, the lessor of its two Airbus A320 aircraft has required scheduled maintenance of one aircraft as well as an unscheduled maintenance check of the other, with both Airbus aircraft now on the ground at Amsterdam.
The debts have frightened Armenian passengers away from Air Armenia that is also now left with only one aircraft, a Boeing 737-500.
While the carrier hopes to return services shortly before Christmas, the market remains served by competitors including Aeroflot, VIM Avia, Transaero, S7 Sibir, and Ural Airlines.
Air Armenia was set up in 2003 with a focus on air cargo services, adding scheduled passenger services from October 27, 2013, with flights from Yerevan to Moscow Vnukovo Airport.
