Jan 23, 2014 (newstodate): The ongoing tender process by UPS for freighter operations is reportedly soon to close.
Due to the strict confidentiality clause imposed by UPS on the bidders, nothing has surfaced from behind the closed doors and all participants maintain total silence on whether they are in or out.
The outcome will be crucial to the current contractor, the Danish A P Moller Group's Star Air that has long been operating for UPS in Europe, with 11 Boeing 767-200SF aircraft on a lease agreement with GECAS.
Speculations are that West Atlantic is among the contestants to land the much-coveted UPS contract.
This could be a significant result from the Gothenburg-based West Atlantic Group's new strategic partnership with the Ohio-based Air Transport Services Group, ATSG that has taken a 25 percent stake in the UK/Swedish carrier.
With the new partnership, West Atlantic expects to take delivery of its first Boeing 767 freighter by the end of Q1, 2014, and might easily build up strength in this freighter segment drawing on the pool of more than 50 aircraft of this type currently operated by ATSG.
