Jan 07, 2014 (newstodate): Poland is to revitalize a former military air force base, now named Szczytno-Szymany International Airport.
The airport has not seen air traffic since 2003, except for ad-hoc charter operations and GA flights.
Plans are now to launch a tender for construction of a new passenger terminal to be commissioned by 2015 allowing for opening of commercial flights to served the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in the North-eastern region of Poland.
According to prognosis, the airport will be handling some 57,000 passengers in its first year of operations, expected to grow to 730,000 passengers during the coming years.
The airport has one 2,000m runway but lacks modern infrastructure to handling of flight operations according to current requirements.
On the negative side of history, the airport was discerned to be used in secret CIA operations in connection to the war on terror, with the Polish government eventually admitting that at least six CIA flights had passed through Szymany in 2003.
