Jan 06, 2013 (newstodate): The new Georgian government has scrapped the plans from 2009 for construction of a new international airport at Poti.
Earlier operating commercial flights but devoid of operations since the early 90'ies, Poti Airport was originally slated to be re-opened in 2013 offering also international flights as the country's 3rd international airport besides Tbilisi and Batumi.
The new government installed late in 2013 has however called off the plans due to the environment around Poti that covers wet areas with large colonies of birds.
Instead, plans are now to establish a new airport to be located at Anaklia, at Georgia's western Black Sea coast.
The new airport will be primarily dedicated to serving international cargo flights.
