Jan 28, 2014 (newstodate): Kosovo is planning to open up a new airport for commercial services.
On December 18, 2013, Dakovica Airfield was handed back to Kosovo's authorities by the Italian Air Force, ending the KFOR tutelage after the Balkan wars.
Plans are now to seek private investors to support the development of the airport, with air cargo business as the expected key driver serving the region.
The airport currently has one 2,000m runway and has so far been used mainly for military and humanitarian flights.
When redeveloped, the airport in the country's western part would also support Kosovo's Pristina Airport as an alternate airport during bad weather and other special conditions.
