Jan 31, 2014 (newstodate): Uzbekistan is to upgrade the international airport at Urgench, near Lake Baikal.
Plans are to build two new passenger terminals slated for completion by 2016 with the capacity of handling 400 passengers per hour, adding to the existing facility's 300 passenger per hour capacity.
The plans also include the acquisition of new equipment including scanning and baggage handling.
Like 10 other airports in Uzbekistan, Urgench International Airport is state-owned through the national carrier Uzbekistan Airlines that will also foot the investments.
Urgench International Airport has one 3,373 m runway and is served by the Russian carriers Rossiya and S7 Sibir Airlines with flights to St Petersburg and Moscow, as well as Uzbekistan Airlines.
