Jan 14, 2014 (newstodate): Scandinavia will see the arrival of the third Gulf carrier - but no date has yet been set.
Speaking at yesterday's Etihad/Air Berlin press conference on Monday, Etihad's CEO, James Hogan confirmed that Scandinavia is indeed an attractive market, and Etihad expects to launch routes into the region within "the next few years", providing no further details on this.
Pending the start of own routes, Etihad is code-sharing its Scandinavian flights with equity-partner airline Air Berlin connecting to Etihad's German hubs with flights to Abu Dhabi.
Etihad is also code-sharing with Latvia's airBaltic on the carrier's routes to Copenhagen, Billund, Helsinki, Oslo, and Stockholm, as well as flights between Riga and Abu Dhabi from December 16, 2013.
First to enter the Scandinavian market with direct flights was Qatar Airways calling at Copenhagen from March 30, 2010, followed by Gulf Air starting from July 1, 2011, and finally Emirates launching flights from Dubai to Copenhagen on August 1, 2011.
Gulf air, however, retreated again with its last Scandinavian operation on February 4, 2013.
