Jan 27, 2014 (newstodate): China has ambitions to establish Xinjiang's Urumqi Diwopu International Airport as a new hub for traffic between Central Asia, West Asia and Europe.
Plans are to strengthen the international route network alongside a focus on a tightly-nit network of domestic routes allowing Urumqi Airport to become a gateway in a new Silk Road.
In 2013, the airport handled a total of 17 mio passengers as well as 165,000 tonnes of cargo.
Urumqi Dipowu International Airport is China's 15th busiest airport, and has one 3,500m runway and has the capacity of handling up to 275,000 tonnes of cargo in the existing facilities.
