Jan 28, 2014 (newstodate): The market abounds with newcomers to the ACMI business, but do they all survive the test of practice?
-In reality, there are two tiers of ACMI operators: one comprising carriers with IOSA certification, the other carriers without IOSA certification, says Jesper Rungholm, Danish Air Transport CEO.
-It is relatively easy for a non-IOSA certified carrier to throw its excess capacity unto the ACMI market. In most cases the immediate result is a general turbulence, erosion of prices and a brief career lasting only two or three years while leaving another scar on the industry.
-Quality airlines are themselves IOSA certified and require their ACMI partners to be likewise. It is as simple as that. And in the end IOSA certified ACMI providers will endure while new entrants seeking short-term business opportunities will soon fade away.
-Having said that, the IOSA certification is indeed very expensive and requires bi-annual auditing that adds to the costs. In addition, the IOSA certification process is constantly developing, adding more and more issues to the auditing program, says Mr Rungholm.
The IATA Operational Safety Audit, IOSA, program is an internationally recognised and accepted evaluation system designed to assess the operational management and control systems of an airline.
