Jan 10, 2014 (newstodate): 2013 was a year of strong growth in cargo volumes at Latvia's Riga Airport.
Growing by 62.5 percent, y-o-y, cargo volumes landed at 53,539 tonnes thanks to the traffic to feed the ISAF forces by freighter traffic to Afghanistan throughout the year.
December, however, proved an exception to the hefty growth figures as volumes were actually down by 17.8 percent, y-o-y, to 2,453 tonnes. Otherwise, the monthly y-o-y growth has been as high as up to 219 percent in October 2013.
As the ISAF forces are now winding down the engagement the eastbound traffic is due to decline. It remains to be seen if Riga Airport will then be able to secure its logistics position also during the period where equipment, supplies and military shipments are being withdrawn from Afghanistan.
